Dates on a Dime

It’s Friday which means ”date night” at our house. Sometimes (ok, rarely) we hire a babysitter; sometimes we swap babysitting with our friends; sometimes we wait until after the kids go to bed then we play a game, make a fun dessert, watch a movie, etc.; and sometimes we include the kids (which means it’s more of a family activity than a date night!). Last week we included the kids and went out for ice cream, “dates on a dime” style!

We recently moved to a small town and are still trying to scope out fun things to do in our new hometown. Before we moved we had a favorite local ma-and-pa-type ice cream shop we visited a couple times a month. It was so cute to watch the kids stand on their tiptoes to see into the glass-topped freezer to choose their favorite flavor from tubs of homemade Rocky Road, Peanut Butter Fudge, Prailines and Cream, Rainbow Sherbet, Blue Bubblegum, and more.  

 A couple of weeks my son ago was remembering our favorite shop and said, “I wish we could go to an ice cream parlor here.” Since I’m always on the lookout for good deals, I was excited to find a flyer for a local ice cream shop among the junk mail which included some B1G1 FREE coupons! I knew a wish was about to come true!

So, last week we took the kids out for ice cream and we shared two HUGE sundaes with several different flavors of ice cream and toppings. And we used the B1G1 FREE coupon so the total was less than $5. We could have gotten smaller sundaes and paid less, but we were having a hard time deciding among the flavors! My favorite was a White Chocolate Brownie Chunk. YUM.

My point to this post is that even while living frugally you don’t have to give up going on dates or going out to eat. It’s the memories that mean the most.
