Homeschooling
Our Homeschooling Curriculum 2010-2011
Language Arts
Note: Because there is a newer version of this curriculum now available I was able to purchase used readers on E-bay for a great price.
We’re using the 1st Grade Yellow Books and workbook:

Love this program so far and have seen HUGE improvements in just a few weeks. Even if you don’t homeschool, I think this is an awesome at-home supplement. Go here to read more about why I like this program.
- Explode the Code (Phonics/Spelling)
- LOTS AND LOTS of Read Alouds
Just a small handful of some of our favorites:
- Hop on Pop (and all other books by Dr. Suess)
- Books by Robert Munch
- Books by Eric Carle
- Frog and Toad are Friends (and others in the series)
- The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary
- Junie B. Jones series
Math
- Saxon Math
I like Saxon for math because it’s fun as well as practical. In the early grades the lessons use a lot of manipulatives. Ryan thinks it’s so fun that every day he asks to do ”play math.” Not sure he realizes he’s actually learning something!
Science:
We’re studying “life science” based on ideas from The Well-Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education at Home (by Jessie Wise and Susan Wise Bauer). In April my friend Aja and I were able to listen to Susan speak at the Midwest Homeschool Convention and it was AMAZING!! We’ll be spending approximately 20 weeks on animals, 10 weeks on the human body, and 10 weeks on plants.
We’ll also be supplementing with lots of non-fiction read-alouds. Some of our favorites are The Magic School Bus series and Let’s Read and Find Out Sceince Series.
History:
We’re basing history/social studies on ideas from The Well-Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education at Home by Jessie Wise and Susan Wise Bauer as well as using Susan’s Story of the World (One) reader and Activity Book.
