Stick Star

As soon as I saw this idea, I knew I wanted to do it so I put a movie on for the kids, gathered some sticks from a dead tree behind our house, and got to work. Sharon gives good detailed directions, so I’ll just show you my twist on the project.

First, I laid out the sticks in a star shape and then hot glued them in place. (Man, I love that glue gun!)

And then I wrapped and tied the glued ends with raffia. Twine would have added a fun rustic look too!

And that was it! It probably took me 10 minutes?

And I think it’s perfectly imperfect.

Having a scraggly stick star on my kitchen wall is meaningful to me for a few reasons. First, it adds to my star collection which is a visual reminder of my goals.

Second, it reminds me of the rustic wooded land I grew up on and my frugal childhood.

And third, it’s a reminder of a simple life. I recently had a conversation with a good friend who advised, “Someday, when you have all the money in the world ( I wonder if there will be that day? hahaha), you’ll look back at this time [of working through your debt] as a time of resourcefulness and simplicity. And you’ll miss it.”

I’m just going to trust her on the missing it part. . . .

But I believe in purposeful decor. And I want be be surrounded by things that inspire and encourage me. And so hanging that rugged stick star does that for me as it is another visual reminder that we are living simply, resourcefully, and creatively as we work toward the goal of financial freedom.

Okay, and plus, I think it looks charming and cute!
