Pepper Steak with Sweet Onion Sauce

A couple of years ago I saw a similar, much more complicated recipe on The Food Network and then recreated it with ingredients I had at home. Jared loved it so I made sure to write down my method and ingredients. Then I forgot about the dish until recently when I found my notes tucked in one of my seldom-used cookbooks. I had some round steak in the freezer so I thought we’d try it again tonight.

Pepper Steak with Sweet Onion Sauce

  • 2-4 small steaks
  • coarsely ground black pepper
  • salt
  • 1/2 cup orange marmalade
  • 1/2 cup water
  • several shakes Worchestershire sauce
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced

Season meat generously with salt and pepper. Sear in a hot pan on both sides. Add remaining ingredients, and cook until sauce is thick and sticky, and onions are carmelized. Serve with rice.

On Our Menu: Pepper Steak with Sweet Onion Sauce, Brown Rice, Steamed Broccoli

I think when I made this before I must have used sugar-free marmalade because tonight’s version was WAY too sweet. So I tweeked the recipe and added some water to the ingredient list to hopefully help balance it. (You may need to do some experimenting yourself if you decide to try this.) The nutty brown rice was really good with the sauce though, and helped absorb the sweetness. And the pepper is a nice compliment to the sweet as well. Overall a good dish.
