A vision board is a pictorial representation of your goals, and we’ve made it a yearly tradition to create a vision board every January to remind us of the things we’d like to accomplish each year.
When my husband, Jared, makes his board, he likes to make a list of goals and then search Google Images to make a printable graphic collage. My preferred method is to go through old magazines (I save them all year for this project) and create an old-school cut-and-paste collage of my goals and dreams for the year.
Creating a Vision Board with Kids
This year we included the kids in the annual ritual. We feel it’s our job as parents to prepare our kiddos for adulthood and it’s important to teach them the life-skill of setting (and hopefully achieving) goals.
So we started with a brainstorming session of “goals” each child wanted to accomplish this year (mostly just things they want to do). When brainstorming, anything goes. We call it brain dumping, or brain throw up. (Little boys love that one!) This is not the time to be a dream crusher.
Then, (depending on the parent helping!) we searched for images, either on the computer for clip art, or through old magazines.
Last, we paste the images collage-style to create the visual representation of their goals for the year. To make the vision boards even more special and durable for the kids, we laminated them.
The kids’ vision boards are hanging in a special place in their rooms. But now that the project is over–what’s next?
Dreaming up the goal is only part of the process. (And the fun part, if we’re being honest!) Come see my plan for helping the kids actually accomplish what’s on their vision board.
