DIY No-Sew Tooth Fairy Bag {Tutorial}

We hit a major milestone here this week! I’m talking about our firstborn loosing his first tooth. It’s moments like this that cause me to shed a little tear and wonder where my baby has gone. I already anticipate being a mess when he gets his driver’s license. Just sayin.’

Of course the talk of the night was whether the tooth fairy would visit, and what she might leave. Oh, the pressure this brought these clueless parents when experiencing the ritual for the first time! I mean, you have to do it right, because there are other kids down the line who will be losing their pearly whites sooner than I want to admit.

And what’s the going rate these days, anyway? She brought a quarter per tooth when Jared and I were kids. But I do distinctly remember being jealous that she left some kids a dollar. Ryan claims his classmate got $12. What?! I’m justifying by telling myself he must be an only child.

Up until a few days ago I’d forgotten just how tiny those baby teeth are, and knew we couldn’t just put it under his pillow. I learned that the hard way as a kid who lost a tooth in the night. My wise mom suggested she had connections and if I put a note under my pillow she was sure the tooth fairy wouldn’t mind the substitute. If only I’d had a cute little bag to keep my tooth in then!

Since all the time I have for crafting these days is about 10 minutes standing at the kitchen table, I opted to make this a no-sew project. But if you prefer, feel free to use embroidery floss or your sewing machine to close the seams on the bag.

For this mini no-sew bag you’ll need:

piece of colored felt
piece of white or ivory felt
glue gun or embroidery floss
yarn or cord (about 30 inches)
scissors
safety pin (optional)

Cut a large rectangle strip from the colored felt. (I cut off a third of a sheet, making my rectangle about 4″x8″.)

Squeeze a strip of glue about 2 inches down on each end of the felt. Fold the felt over to create a “tube.” The drawstring will be going through here, so make sure it’s a wide enough “tube” and that you don’t glue the sides shut.

Fold the felt in half so that the top hems are on the inside. Glue the sides shut, stopping just before you reach the hems at the top (don’t glue the drawstring “tubes” shut).

Cut a tooth shape from the white/ivory felt.

Glue the tooth onto the bag, for decoration. OR, if you want, just glue down the sides, leaving the top and middle of the felt tooth unglued, so it forms a little “pocket” to put the baby teeth in.

Cut the string/yarn in two equal pieces. Thread one string through one of the hemmed tubes. If you’re having trouble getting it through, try putting a safety pin on the end of the string and bunching up the felt to thread it through.
