Kool-Aid Playdough

by pameladonnis

We spent the afternoon with some good friends making Koolaid playdough. I love this recipe for Kool-Aid Playdough because the soft dough smells so good and doesn’t stain your hands.

Kool-Aid Playdough

  • 1 to 1.5 cups flour
  • 0.5 cup salt
  • 1 packet unsweetened Kool-Aid powder (more if you want a more vibrant color)
  • 3 TBSP oil
  • 1 cup boiling water

Combine flour, salt, oil and Kool-Aid powder. Add boiling water. Stir together. Knead mixture until it forms a soft dough. If dough is too sticky, add more flour. Mix well and play! Store in a sealed container.

I love the idea of making play dough at home and not have to buy it. Can I use this recipe with jello instead of Kool-Aid? The jello recipes all call for cream of tartar and I don’t have it. Thanks to people like you that help us with little kids.

Hmmm. My only hesitation with subbing Jello is that the sugar in it might make the dough sticky? But it’s definitely worth experimenting with, especially if you have other play dough recipes that call for Jello! If you do, let us know how it turns out!

I tried the recipe , but mine turned out very sticky :/ maybe once it cools I will be able to kneed it and turn it into the playdough like pcitured above.

I would suggest adding more flour if it’s too sticky. Sometimes altitude affects recipes. Just knead more flour in until it’s a good consistency.

Hey pam! That is cool. I make play doh for my boys all the time. never will I pay for the stuff! But the kool-aid version seems way cool. You dont need “Cream Of Tartar”? And its still nice and “rubbery”?

It’s great, and stays soft for a long time! I just keep it in the back of the fridge when they are done playing with it. No cream of tartar needed.

I mixed up some of this kool aid playdough tonight for the kids and it turned out great and smells so good! I will never buy play dough again. I think I will make some for my kids at daycare.
    Thanks for the idea!

Oh I love this trick! Does it turn your hands color like the food dyes?

No, it doesn’t stain your hands! So cool, right? I remember one time I made playdough with the kiddos and then I happened to have a dr. appointment later that day and my hands were pretty badly stained red from the food coloring and the dr. wanted to know what happened. LOL
