All About Polar Bears

by pameladonnis

Besides creating wintery art projects, we’ve been learning all about polar bears!

Language Arts

To introduce the arctic animal, we consulted our favorite animal encyclopedia, and then a variety of polar bear-themed books from the library and Amazon. Searching the web via Swagbucks is an easy way to earn free Amazon gift cards, and they come in handy when it’s time to purchase a couple of new books!

Polar Bear Research Guide | Polar Bears | Face to Face with Polar Bears

After reading about polar bears, the kids completed a web to help them visually sort the information we were gathering.

They loved the cut-and-paste true/false activity, and it stretched them a bit as they had to search for a few of the answers. It was a good opportunity to teach simple research using the internet and non-fiction books.

I’ve mentioned before how much my kids love the Magic Treehouse series, so we read aloud book #12, Polar Bears Past Bedtime, and I created a set of set of literacy activities to go along with the novel. The kids completed the fun comprehension assessments after reading or listening to each chapter.

We also carried on the polar bear theme as they practiced basic skills like ABC order, unscramble spelling, and fill-in-the blank facts.

Art

Serity (pre-K) begs to paint and glue all day long, so this girl was in artist-heaven as we completed this project.

Math

As a supplement to our regular math curriculum, the kids colored an addition/subtraction color-by-number and Emmy (my kinder) practiced some polar-themed story problems. She takes after me and is a very visual learner, so activities like these really help her understand the otherwise abstract concepts.

We also reviewed even numbers as they helped polar bear “get through the blizzard” with a do-a-dot marker.

What a full week of wintery fun! If you’re interested in any of these printable activities, they’re available (plus lots more!) in my Teachers Pay Teachers store.
