We started back to school this week, and when the {public} school bus passed by our house this morning, my stomach lurched. Oh, how much easier it would be to send those kiddos off on the bus.
Last year’s schooling ended bumpy. The short story is just that I took on more curriculum than was realistic (especially for our first year homeschooling), and this mama burned out.
We didn’t make it all the way through the schoolbooks, and the idealist plans to carry-on throughout the summer were ultimately consumed with the purchase of a 1970’s two-story ranch (and all the projects that come along with moving and renovating an old home).
But setting our curriculum aside allowed time (oftentimes while sanding and painting kitchen cabinets or stripping wallpaper) to re-evaluate my feelings on homeschooling and reestablish our “why.” It was also a time to reflect on the mistakes prepare better for the upcoming year (this time with much more realistic expectations).
So while it’s still tempting to flag down that passing yellow school bus, this mama’s pressing forward and three certain kids are super excited to begin the 2013-2014 school year.

Missed your blog! I’d love to see pictures of your renovation. I admire you for tackling it, on top of homeschooling. Keep up the good work!!

I’ll definitely post some! I’m slow at the projects though, since we’re DIYing everything ourselves!
Glad you stuck around :).

it’s good to have you back — i know it’s odd, but i love your blog so much, i feel like you’re an old friend.
i’m so with you on the homeschooling overload. i’m already starting to rethink my plan for this year, and i’m only one week in. on those days when i think i’m crazy, i take a step back and remember why i’m doing this and know that it is the right thing.
bless your heart on the moving and renovating — been there too, and it’s really not that fun, but somehow we survive. katharine.

Thank you so much! I don’t think it’s odd, blogs have a way of connecting us all as friends!
Good luck on your upcoming school year as well! It’s so good to have others who “get it.”
